This was my first phish show. They played a lot of the songs I liked and they broke out a couple songs they don't play very often like mellow mood, and cool it down. The Cities in the second set was really great. all around great show. To bad phish never comes back to the twin cities anymore. I kept hoping they would come back but they still haven't. I finally decided to go see them again in 2012 at alpine valley.

if you like your jams long and ambient,check out this Cities out..this version is 19min.long, incredible playing by all four members with a nice segue into Free..Cool it Down was brought back on this night which had another nice segue in Bowie..enc:was a quick Fire..

I can’t say there’s much interesting about the first set overall. Chalk Dust has some mildly above average work from Trey and Roggae has some cool interplay between Mike, Fish, and Trey. But yeah once again I got “going through the motions” vibes from this set.

However, hard disagree with @jibler on this Cities. I was mesmerized! There’s the textural ambience from ‘99 I’ve been missing! The jam gradually picks up energy again near the end for a cool finale > Free. Free ain’t too shabby neither. Extended by a bit, good stuff from Mike and Trey is seemingly starting to favor the lower register and thick tones from his guitar. Kind of a proto-2.0 sound. Ya Mar seems to have potential to be stretched out but it doesn’t go anywhere. Carini is played to its standard loud metallic sludge. Page croons us down with Lawn Boy as usual. As he heads back to the keys Fish comes out from behind his drums for the vacuum portion of the show. Something about this felt a little off to me. Like Fish feeling like this joke is old. Particularly because these segments are usually a lot more joyous and silly. Cool It Down comes out of nowhere and, just like Halloween debut, this one has a nice extended jam attached. Give it a listen. Bowie has some fine set closing energy and Fire once again is a perfect encore.

This one is a bit tired. Cities > Free is great as is Cool It Down -> Bowie. Give that Roggae a listen as well.

Fun show with great energy from the crowd and band. Was glad to see mellow mood. The target center erupted with pot smoke... it was hilarious. Band was on point. solid first set. I might add the only time I saw a glowsticks war with no music was during the divided sky pause at this show. ...lol Minnesota you so crazy....

Cities was fun. A nod to the twin cities and the crowd loved it. Really groovy jam. So awesome. Loved free as usual. Band was having fun you could tell. Fishman did his weird shit and then they played cool it down which was great. I always remember this show fondly as it was such a fun night. Give it a listen.

This was my third time seeing the band after catching them twice during Summer 2000 tour! I was 17 years old and living in Rapid City, SD-- we couldn't believe our favorite band was playing a mere 9-hour drive away! In the Midwest, that's basically neighbors! I remember a lot of hoodies and flannel in the lot-- the lot scene was a lot smaller than Alpine or Deer Creek, but it was still hopping. Our seats were all the way across the floor and halfway up the back stands, so this was a light-show only for us.

Relistening to this one on it's 24th anniversary, I can't help but agree with a lot of the other reviews-- this show is solid, but there is not a lot of standout stuff in the first set. Sloth is tight and energetic, Divided Sky had a loooonnnnng pause while the band stopped to watch the glowstick war that I never see mentioned in the show notes (biggest glowstick war I personally have ever attended), and Roggae really embellished the clash between mellow and loud sections. I remember Roggae having almost a toy-like quality live, like a music box or a wind-up doll; listening to it again, a lot of that comes from Fishman's work on blocks and bells. Good stuff, but not much to write home about.

Getting into the second set, the crowd is clearly ready for some shenanigans, and Cities delivers with some Santana-inspired blues before dishing up a hearty helping of outer space. Free stays grounded and a little spooky, with some nice work from Mike & Fish setting up a driving pace that keeps Trey really focused during the build. This was my first time hearing Carini, and it definitely made an impression at the time. I remember everything from Lawn Boy until Cool it Down was very funny live, there was a lot of laughter in the crowd. Cool it Down has some fun exploration and a very tight but otherwise unremarkable David Bowie closes the set. The single-song encore of Fire was absolutely blistering live, and definitely left us all wanting more.

This would be the last time I would see the band before the 2001 hiatus, and I still treasure the memory of this show. Of all the times I've seen Phish, this is the only show that has never had an SBD release or leak, so I am still out there chasing it every few years. Maybe some day!

Divided Sky: Like peanut butter and chocolate, The Sloth and Divided Sky were meant for each other. Good version.

Roggae: Dreamlike.

First Tube: Good placement, set needed some punch.

Punch You in the Eye: Interesting late first set placement. Like!

Sample in a Jar: Ok, guess they are saving it all for the second set.

First set summary: It’s not hateful but there is literally nothing here to revisit. At all.

Cities: Subtle loop at 6:49. I see the clap along crowd from Chicago made the trip to MN. How could you clap along to this extremely mellow groove in the 8-minute range? Defies logic. Most think this is over at 9 minutes and applaud as if they are going to go to another tune. Nope. This jam is beyond mellow, enough to put you to sleep. This jam could almost be out of the Lemonwheel ambient set. I'm only half kidding.

Free: This Free rocks big time. Mike thumps. Crowd eats it up.

Ya Mar: What an incredibly odd place in the set for this tune.

Carini: Rocks, good little jam.

HYHU LOVE YOU HYHU: Fun with Fishman

Cool it Down: RARE. Huge bust out. First time played since its debut at 10.31.98, 130 shows. This jam consists of a lot of boring strumming. Sleepwalking.

David Bowie: Pretty strong Bowie and a great way to close the set.

Encore:

Fire: Rip roaring good time.

Second set summary: This show just does not do it for me. Cities is the big highlight and it is too mellow for my tastes. Cool it Down has that big bustout cache going for it. Free, Carini and Bowie were all good. But certainly not great. I would rate this as a 3.3 out of 5.
